Sam's youthful experiences in art, at the age
of four, probably had little significance to a lad flexing his
childish imagination for the first time. However his initial
tutoring was at the hands of Stanley Spencer's brother who attempted
to teach him the rudiments of drawing. Not a bad start. It obviously
left a mark on him, for the desire to cultivate his creative
talents stayed with him!
However the opportunity was a long time coming. The need to
paint was put on hold. Life and the pursuit of a career got
in the way you might say. His father wasn't keen for Sam to
risk a career in the hit and more often miss arts and found
it difficult to equate fees he was paying for schooling, with
something he regarded as a hobby and unlikely to produce steady
income. As pragmatic a notion as that is it did not quel his
desire to be creative but it was very much on the back burner
for. Sam therefore, found himself graduating in chemistry and
thence travelling the world over involved in the trading of
metals and minerals.
His creativity supressed, it was bound to re-emerge later in
his life and in 1988 he decided to set aside time to fulfill
his artistic ambitions which had been simmering for years.
In a bid to catch up with his ambitions Sam
sought tuition and found it with with Piers Ottey, since when
he has been an enthusiastic and receptive student of Piers.
He's subsequently exhibited in the Sussex Open and has
had several exhibitions in Chichester.
Sam admits openly that he is fascinated by the drama of adjacent
colours and shapes, and much of his painting is an attempt to
dramatise the what he sees, still life, landscapes or people
that make up real life. Sam also prefers the flexibility of
oils with its vast possibilities and variations in application,
it is for him the perfect medium with which to innovate and
explore his ideas. To see Sam's work visit his on line gallery.
